April 10, 2011: Chased the tornado fest in Iowa yesterday. Witnessed a half dozen tornadoes at least. One Daytime 3/4 mile wide wedge that destroyed the town of Mapleton, Iowa. Then after dark the thing went absolutely nuts. Watched a beautiful stovepipe on the ground for 5 minutes, and later it produced a few very large tornadoes. I have photos of four of them. Ended up heading back home just before the storm produced twin stovepipes. Doh!! But all in all it was an incredible day, though I wish I hadn't given up early or I would have been a lot closer to the night time tornadoes. I have video of the entire mapleton tornado that I'll post as a timelapse later tonight. Here is a photo of the first night time stove pipe near Arthur, Iowa. Should be easy to sit out the rest of the marginal chases this month lol.
