December 28, 2010: I had a couple interesting drives recently. I went home to Waconia for Christmas and had to drive through a snowstorm and an 80 mile stretch of freezing rain. There was about 2-5" of snow ON the roads through much of Minnesota and none of the roads had been touched by snowplows (of course I drove through the night, so that makes a little more sense) It usually takes 7 hours to drive up there, with the bad roads it took 10 hours. I came back yesterday and there was a heavy hoar frosting. Unfortunately I was in a hurry to get back to Lincoln, because I had to work at 5pm, so I did not take any photos with my real camera. The shot below was taken with my phone. It's nice to have a good back up camera.

It's hard to describe how anxious I am for spring to arrive. It's the one thing I have to look forward to. Lincoln needs to get hit by a big snowstorm to keep me occupied for a few days during the rest of my two week winter break. Once the next semester starts I will have a lot of other things to think about, and less time to look forward to chase season. Really hoping that the latest GFS verifies, it would give us 6-8" of snow (link is time sensitive). Not the "legendary blizzard" it was showing last week, but I'd be happy with that.

December 21, 2010: An incredibly rare event occured tonight, for the first time in over 300 years a lunar eclipse occurs on the winter solstice. Being the only interesting thing going on for the last few months, I had to think of an interesting/unique way to photograph it. So the first thing that came to mind (living in Lincoln) was the capital. Zoom in on the moon with the sower right next to it. Thought it'd be a great idea, didn't go quite as well as I'd hoped, but it works. I was hoping the moon would have been a lot lower on the horizon (it was basically straight up) so I could be a good distance from the capital to make the moon seem really big, but I had to be literally 10 feet from the building to get this shot. I have a few more I'll probably post tomorrow, but right now I need sleep. It's 4:45a.m. EDIT: I added a second photo below, the new photo is at 300mm, closer to the middle of totality than the first.

December 8, 2010: Went to squaw creek on the 5th and already finished the account here. Man has it been a long time since I've used the camera, this was by no means an awesome trip down there, but it'll do. We need some storms... bad. I am getting crazier each month we go with any interesting weather. Hopefully something changes soon. Here a few just to throw on the front page. There are 5 more images in the account.
