December 27, 2009: So the blizzard was rather anticlimactic, ended up with about 13" or so. I've actually set a new record for the longest amount of time without uploading photos to my computer, it's been over a month today! Figure I'll put up another one from squaw creek, sucks looking at all the pictures from the same day down there, wish I could have gone more than once during good shooting conditions. This is probably the only one left worth posting, most of the others are too soft.
We should finally see the sun tomorrow, possibly accompanied by sun dogs and a CZA. I think I'm just going to go back through some of the storm chase photo albums and post a few more. Since it appears that nothing is going to really be happening for a LONG while.
December 23, 2009: Possible historical blizzard about to unfold. The last 5 days the both the Euro and GFS have been consistantly putting 3-4" of liquid winter precip along the Missouri river. Total liquid has dropped a bit recently but the low pressure is forecasted to reach 988 or so in Central Iowa creating blizzard conditions and over a foot of snow to a widespread area. I don't think 24" is out of the question somewhere and with 40mph gusting winds drifts of 10ft shouldn't be all that uncommon. Hopefully I'll get a chance to document this in some way, even though snow usually isn't that interesting. Merry Christmas everyone!
December 14, 2009: We got 10 inches of snow last Tuesday, which totally fowled up any hopes of going back to squaw creek. There were some crazy sun dogs and arcs after the snowstorm, but I was at work without the camera.
The Geminids peaked last night, you guessed it, it was cloudy. we got 09ed once again!! Apparently 09ed is a verb now, since May 09 was arguably the worst May of the decade in terms of storms. So if you get screwed, you can just say you got 09ed lol. I really cannot wait until spring 2010, really can't stand winter any longer. If clouds clear tonight I'd have to watch the meteors in -10F temps...hmm, lets just say I'll be watching from my deck and will be making frequent trips inside.
Hopefully 2010 will begin with luck for the Quadrantids, man that would be a miracle lol, if we could get clear skies and low temperatures in the 30s or upper 20s. First a record cold October, then a record warm November, now a brutal December, hopefully this trend continues and January is abnormally warm. But as long as winter ends on February 28th, I'm fine lol. Only 76 days until March 1st! I need to stop ranting and find something to take pictures of. If only I could get that freaking T-mount shipped here! I looked on the tracker and its been in Omaha since the 8th! 6 days its sitting in the post office. I mean the roads were kinda bad Tuesday through Thursday, but not Friday or Saturday.
There's a breathtaking meteor on the front page of spaceweather.com seen here that really frustrated me last night while looking out the window at drizzle/fog/snow/rain/frzrn and whatever other bad visibilities are possible. < /rant >
December 3, 2009: Still kinda just waiting for things to happen. The eagle migration is just now getting underway, and the Geminids are drawing close. I bought a camera adapter for my telescope so I can use it for shooting eagles, it will be a 1000mm equivalent when setup, still waiting for that stuff to get shipped here. Hopefully it gets here by the weekend, but I have doubts about that, for some reason (holiday?) the shipping is taking forever this time, while normally its really fast through amazon.
I did a little night sky blog on the Night Sky page about the Geminids, so check that out. I'm really hoping to get clear skies for that, since it's so much more of a dependable shower, and with a predicted 140 ZHR I could easily see 1000+ meteors with an all night observing session, which I plan to do weather permitting.
Unfortunately the above average temperatures have left and now we're going to have to deal with normal freezing temperatures, sigh. I didn't think I would hate winter that much this year, but I was wrong. Might go to Squaw creek this weekend, so hopefully a photo update by Monday.
