August 30, 2009: Forth morning with a fog outing this month, This one was pretty cool though. Started at Murray Hill before light and there was no fog, it slowly developed and did some cool stuff, but a view to the east showed a filled valley. Blasted east to Pisgah for some fog bow hunting, these are the first fog bows I've seen, and man were they bright! the photo doesn't do it justice, it was much more stunning visually than this. Well the fourth day in a row it's supposed to fog again tomorrow morning, don't think I'm going this time, Since I've been up there so many times this month, probably not worth the gas. I think I've got enough good images to sort through, maybe I'll do that in the morning.
Off to the Wind River Range on Wednesday, going on a 38 mile backpacking loop. Brining the camera with the 10-20mm and telephoto, and if my 50mm comes in the mail I might bring that too. I'll be back Sunday or Monday, so expect some images on Monday or Tuesday!
August 29, 2009: Set up a temp page with a couple more images from the fog on the 22nd. I will not be able to get that full account up until I return from the wind river range most likely. Check out the two new images here. It's really tough to work with these fog images in bad light, just no contrast between the sky and foreground. Soon enough I will get it up though!
August 28, 2009: Need to get those accounts done, I should update tomorrow sometime with at least one of them done. Redid the About page, added a few more paragraphs and equipment list etc... Anyway should have some more stuff up tomorrow.
August 23, 2009: Another great fog outing, even though at first it seemed like it would bust. No Fog in the Missouri Valley plain, but once in the loess hills near Pisgah, it quickly thickened and provided some very cool looking scenes. I'll make a page for both of these outings soon, I've got over 100 images to go through from these two trips.
Twilight scenes were awesome, but there wasn't much fog at that time, but as soon as the sun rose the valley quickly filled up and covered the road below.
August 22, 2009: Finally got a good low fog at Murray Hill this morning. It was nice and thick at times. Looks like it could do it again tonight.
August 16, 2009: Did a page for the Perseids on the Recent Images page. Just a quick run down of my plans for the fall, well the plans that I know of. Nothing going on for a couple weeks, except maybe a fog outing. September 2-6th I'll be backpacking in the wind river range of Wyoming with some friends, that will yeild some good images I hope. We are doing a 38 mile loop through some tough terrain, should be extremely photogenic. Might even snow while we're there. October brings the Orionids meteor shower, November the Leonids and Geminids in December. I'm sure I'll have a few things here and there in between those things. Going to try and get some good fall foliage stuff too. Thats about all I've got planned at the moment. I should get a online prints page going this fall too at some point.
August 13, 2009: Did another little observing session tonight and saw 56 meteors in 2.5 hours. Actually got one in the frame, but extremely cropped and small, see it here. Also did a star trail while hoping to have a fireball go through the frame, no such luck. Later I waited to do a moonlit star trail over the platte river, but clouds prevented that.
August 12, 2009: For the most part the Perseids were boring. Saw 217 meteors though which is a record for me in a night. Captured a big 0 meteors on Camera, probably due to the fact I wasted half my battery trying to shoot lightning from this little tiny storm in Nebraska. Crazy looking ray opposite the sunset here, it was just a huge line dividing the sky, never seen it that define before. Might have been the highlight of the night lol. Here are a couple of the evening.
August 9, 2009: The Black hills report is done now too. Check it out here. Just the snowy range to do now, should be up by Tuesday afternoon. Planning on watching the entire Perseid Meteor shower on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Did a little practice tonight learning some post processing. Mainly just stacking, but there is so much potential in that. I drove to south of Yutan, Nebraska to try some star trails. A bunch of cars passed with their brights on and ruined just enough of my shots that the trails are pretty short. I can't believe how many people were on that road that late.
Probably witnessed two drug deals too, twice two cars stopped right next to each other for 2 minutes, of course facing me with their headlights on putting lens flares in my shots. Also some idiot doing cookies in the middle of the intersection, anyway that kind of sucked but still did get a pretty good result for the first try at least.
Oh yes and I did add a little bit to the Night Sky page, but I'll add even more to it later. Trying to focus on this Shower but I have my doubts with the moon. Getting a fireball shouldn't be too hard even with the moon if I'm at it for 5 hours. At least it won't be because I didn't try.
Haven't had a storm since June and Don't expect to have one anytime soon. The cap is dominating 2009. I'd be surprised if anything forms today before sunset.
August 4, 2009: The Badlands Trip report is finally finished on two pages HERE. The black hills and Snowy range should be done sometime this week too, it just takes forever to do these things when explaining the story and all. Plus that badlands account has 30 images, takes a bit of time to get that all together. I have Officially called the 2009 chase season quits. Just too frustrating, I might chase a really good setup, but I'm going to ignore most of the "questionable setups". Too bad we didn't get any good Lightning this summer.
I'm shutting down chase mode and going into night sky mode. Later next week the Perseid meteor shower peaks, with a possible outburst over the United States. Brian Emfinger" has been getting some sweet fireball images lately, the latest and best one is found here. That is my new goal is to get some good fireball images this fall. Shouldn't be terribly hard with some effort, the leonids are supposed to half storm with 500 per hour in mid November.
I might start up the original Tonight's Sky again as well this fall, to give me something to do. I'll just do it at the Night Sky page. So let the Meteor showers begin!
August 2, 2009: Wow it's August. I'm working on the images from the trip, I just can't stay focused. I think once I go back to work it will be easier to go through them, I know it sounds stupid, but once I get back to a schedule it should help me get focused. I started the badlands page multiple times and my computer died, so I had to start over. Got a few more images done now. Here is one from the snowy range.
I'm starting to wonder if I'll see a real storm again this year. Everything since June has been weak, July didn't even produce any good lightning storms, at least not around here. Even with this cool July (NW flow) I'm ready for fall. Too bad we'll be in the 90's this week, maybe a late summer? I hope not I'm good with the cooler tempertures we've been having. Unless of course the heat brings some good storms with it.
