October 10, 2009 record snowfall

Its only snowed earlier than this twice since 1949 in Omaha. A surprise big snowfall where areas northwest of town saw nearly 8" ! I measured around 4" at my house in southwest Omaha. Certain was cool to see snow in early October, though I'm glad to see it go away for another month (I hope). Since the snow was going on around peak fall colors I decided to try some fall colors with snow coated over them, the problem is that Omaha doesn't have many trees that turn color and it was a little early for the peak.

I drove down to Platte river state park again hoping that the observation tower would have a sweet view, and it kinda did.

It was COLD up there, 10 to 20mph winds in upper 20's... not in October! that wouldn't be bad if it was winter and I was used to it. Heck it was 70 three days earlier. I later went to what is probably the only natural waterfall in eastern Nebraska, sandstone falls. I was hoping the leaves down there would have some color, but I was out of luck.

I found a few good red leaves, but nothing real special. I'll take it for October though!

Be sure to check out Mike Hollingsheads account of this snow, hes got some excellent images of fall leaves and snow.
