August 30, 2009 western Iowa fog

Woke up real early and headed to the usually fog spot, met up with Mike Hollingshead and Chris Allington. There wasn't really any fog when we got there around 4am, but soon after it slowly started to develop and some "cool" ops started with some blurring fog at night. Didn't get many shots to turn out since there was no moon to help lighten things up and all my lenses at this time are slow.

As it lightened a bit, it grew a lot thicker, especially to the north.

It was also doing some cool stuff on this hill that juts out to the south, it was kinda rolling over that. It would be sweet to timelapse this happening sometime, although it was still too dark to use a video camera. This shot was around a second exposure.

Around this time a look to the east showed a valley filled with fog, so Chris decided to head over there, while Mike and I stayed. I tried to climb the hill on the other side of the road to Murray Hill to see if the view got any better to the north, because often it will go crazy up there, and from Murrays vantage point you can't really see what going on, that hill blocks most of the view. Unfortunately that hill isn't any better, but it was interesting to see a different view of where we were. These two shots are from that other hill.

I got a phone call from Chris about this time and he said it was going crazy over there, so I run down this hill and jump over the electric fence lol. We both head over there but by the time we get there the light is too harsh to really get and good shots above the fog. But here's one from the top of the hill looking north.

Now I realize that fog bow madness is going on below and I spent around an hour searching for the brightest ones. It was cool to be able to get this farmhouse underneath the bow. I got this shot "published" on msnbc.com btw.

Unbelievable how many times there was fog this fall, I believe I got up at 3a.m. at least 10 times. I drove around 500 miles in those trips. Yikes thats quite a bit of gas, I need to save for the chase season next year.
