May 1, 2009: Downtown Omaha
After a week of having nothing to shoot with the sigma 10-20mm I just bought, I just made myself go, the sunset didn't help as it was almost completely overcast, but I still had a good time. Nothing too spectacular, but I needed something to do, and I got to explore downtown a little bit more. So I kinda made two loops, the first was about an hour before sunset and I just walked around looking for good spots later. I did get a pretty good one at Gene Lahey mall during the day.
Later I drove around looking for other good spots, really I was just killing time until the better light ops, which I kinda screwed up anyway, but whatever, now I've learned. This one is from 13th street bridge over Gene Lahey. Its cropped from 10mm, so not a true 10. All the rest below are at the widest 10mm and none else are cropped.
I should have stayed at the bridge longer probably, but I wasn't thinking. I walked toward the bigger buildings, first national and the woodmen tower. This one is on the corner of 14th and Douglas.
Now I was close to the buildings, I saw a parking garage and thought I'd try the view from the top. I thought it would be locked, but I got lucky I guess. I climbed the 8 flights of stairs and realized that i'm out of shape, lol. Anyway, got to the top and It wasn't the view I wanted, I should have been to the one across the street, but that one was locked. Took a couple from the top of the one, which was directly east of first national tower.
I wasn't going to put this shot up, but someone said they liked how it messed with their eyes, so I'll put it up. Just a dozen or so yards from the tower looking up.
Then I wasted a bunch of time walking across town to a spot I thought would be good, but turned out to be crap, mainly because of street lights, those things get really annoying when shooting urban. Now I was walking around trying to shoot just first national from real close, but this guy came up and told me I couldn't?!?! I have no Idea why I wouldn't be able to, I'm just glad he didn't try to make me erase my images. So yeah I had to "leave" now. I just moved on and took this one from 15th and Douglas.
It was too dark to get anymore good shots of the buildings, it just doesn't look good to have a pitch black sky behind the buildings, so I started to head back to the car. Stopped at the park again, but shot this Arch thing that looked pretty cool with the longer shutter.
I liked the tree that hasn't fully budded yet, so Its just little patches of green against the light polluted purple colored skies. This next one might be my favorite of the whole series, just from the angle, and the tree with the moon just above the arch.
Fun time, I'll have to go again sometime. Here's just one I took right by the parking lot, a bridge over some road, like 8th street I think, its basically the closest road to the river, right by conagra park.
